![]() That was not enough for one 19th-century critic, who called the stupendous Zurbarán (confronting the visitor in the exhibition’s first room) of St Francis in Meditation clasping a skull, “a small, black, repulsive picture” when the National Gallery bought it, for £265, in 1853. They were optical instruments of religion, windows to another world. ![]() None of the older paintings here – the El Greco with palpable clouds resolving into a vision of Christ, or the great big Murillo of the saint embracing Christ on the Cross – were made to be seen in a museum. The coarse-spun garment is housed in a gilt Baroque frame, not because it is “art” but because it is a relic, to be viewed with devotion. The object I found most moving in the National Gallery’s magnificent exhibition St Francis of Assisi was a sackcloth habit reputed to have been worn by the 13th-century poverello, the man who took poverty seriously. ![]()

We’ll use undocumented immigrant from now on”) or blow someone off (“Sorry: swearing is part of Offbeat Bride, and if you don’t like it, this site may not be a good fit for you”), it’s harder to show genuine respect for the concern and passion that drives a reader to contact us, even when I disagree with their complaint. I’ve written about this before, but this last week I had an especially challenging reader complaint. Sometimes, these complaints are truly educational (I had no idea that the Society of Professional Journalists had voted to replace the phrase “illegal immigrant” with “undocumented immigrant” until a reader emailed me about it) and other times they’re ludicrous (Offbeat Bride’s hilarious “ motherfuckergate” comes to mind here). Since monthly readership of the Offbeat Empire sites is over 300,000 people, it’s to be expected that we’d receive a fair number of reader complaints. At this point, I do find the word problematic - although I still don’t find it racist. The Offbeat Bride Tribe was shuttered in 2015 (for reasons totally unrelated to its name) and as the dialog about cultural appropriate and tribal affiliations has evolved, I can say I’d make different choices now. Dick Grayson is the main focus & its great to see how difficult his relationship is with Bruce. And with that being said, though this book contains a lot of the main points that we associate with batman training a robin, and more specifically the mishaps he had with Dick Grayson, we're still pr esented with a unique take on the origins of the first robin. So it's safe to say that I was eager for this book & preordered it the moment I could. If you read nightwing from new 52 & upward, every story involves some flashback to his time as robin but we never get to new series with him as the boy wonder. And I've been yearning for a recent book that involves dick as Robin, especially one that isn't technically a flashback. Dick Grayson is my favorite comicbook character with Mr Miracle & invincible being tied for second. The ending of this book is what sold me on wanting to continue more of this story. ![]() ![]() "As a Canadian, I find that all commemorations tend to be a bit parochial," she continues.
